Virtual Clinical Optometrist (OD)
Job Description:
GoTo Telemed is seeking licensed Doctors of Optometry (OD) or Ophthalmologists (MD/DO) to join our integrated digital health network as Virtual Clinical Optometrists. In this 100% remote clinical role, you will deliver high-quality anterior segment triage, ocular surface disease management, and asynchronous diagnostic reviews for patients nationwide.
At GoTo Telemed, vision care is not siloed. You will work within an integrated, whole-person clinical ecosystem. When you detect systemic indicators during a virtual ocular assessment—such as hypertensive retinopathy or diabetic macular changes—our proprietary platform allows you to instantly connect the patient with our internal primary care and endocrinology teams. We handle the administrative overhead, allowing you to focus entirely on advanced clinical decision-making and patient education.
Key Responsibilities
- Synchronous Ocular Triage: Conduct real-time, HIPAA-compliant video consultations to assess and manage acute, non-vision-threatening anterior segment conditions, including conjunctivitis, hordeolums, dry eye syndrome, and minor allergic reactions (billed via telehealth E/M codes 99212–99214).
- Asynchronous Diagnostic Review: Perform store-and-forward evaluations of patient-submitted external ocular photography and high-resolution anterior segment images.
- Retinal Imaging Interpretation: Review and interpret remotely captured fundus photography and OCT scans (CPT 92250 / 92134) originating from partner clinics or mobile health units, providing detailed diagnostic reports.
- Teleprescribing: Prescribe appropriate topical ophthalmic medications, oral antibiotics, and allergy treatments in accordance with state optometric practice acts and federal teleprescribing guidelines.
- Systemic Care Coordination: Identify ocular manifestations of systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorders) and seamlessly refer patients to GoTo Telemed's internal medical providers.
- Surgical & Emergent Routing: Rapidly identify sight-threatening conditions (e.g., retinal detachments, severe trauma, acute angle-closure glaucoma) and coordinate immediate referrals to local brick-and-mortar ophthalmic surgeons or emergency departments.
- Clinical Documentation: Maintain precise, timely clinical records within the GoTo Telemed cloud EHR, detailing visual findings, diagnostic opinions, and treatment plans within 24 hours of the encounter.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Doctor of Optometry (OD) from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE), or Doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy (MD/DO) completing an ophthalmology residency.
- Licensure: Active, unencumbered license to practice optometry (with full therapeutic privileges) in at least one U.S. state. Candidates holding multi-state licenses are strongly prioritized.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate clinical practice experience. Prior experience with tele-optometry, remote image reading, or digital health platforms is highly advantageous.
- Credentials: Active federal DEA registration and state controlled-substance credentials (where required for ophthalmic prescribing).
- Workspace: A dedicated, private, and acoustically sound home office space equipped with a high-definition monitor (essential for diagnostic image review), high-speed internet, a webcam, and a headset to guarantee HIPAA compliance.
Compensation & Benefits
- Transparent Earnings: Competitive hourly or per-encounter compensation with transparent, bi-weekly payroll processing.
- Ultimate Flexibility: 100% remote flexibility with customizable scheduling blocks. Practice from home without the physical strain of traditional slit-lamp microscopy.
- Zero Overhead: Dedicated internal support for medical billing, coding, clearinghouse submissions, and revenue cycle management.
- Malpractice Coverage: Comprehensive professional liability insurance provided for all GoTo Telemed platform encounters.
- Interdisciplinary Network: Participate in innovative public health initiatives by integrating vision care with our medical, behavioral, and oral health divisions.
